Traveling Whilst Pregnant

If you are planning to travel abroad, personally or with work whilst you are pregnant there are a few things that you should consider before you go.  The Allbaby team has put together a list of everything that should be thought about before you go to make sure your health and that of your unborn baby is as safe as possible.

When to Travel

If you are planning on a holiday your second trimester is the best time to plan the trip.  travel.  During the first trimester many women feel nauseas and tired.  During the second trimester most women feel like they have a new found energy, the sickness should have passed and you are not too big to slow you down.  Traveling during the third trimester brings along the risk of pre-term delivery, the later you leave travel the higher the risk.  Most airlines won’t let pregnant women fly 36 weeks, always inform the airline if you are pregnant as each airline has a different policy on pregnant fliers.
If you are concerned about traveling whilst being pregnant you should talk to your doctor, each pregnancy is different and if they advice you not to travel then it is a good idea to listen.

Watch What you Eat and Drink

Think about everything you eat when you are away, think about how the food has been prepared and cooked.  Cooked food has more chance of having the germs killed but some salads may not have been cleaned properly.  Eating fruit and vegetables that can be peeled lessen the risk of ingesting germs.
Take a look at our Foods To Avoid article and stay away from foods that you are not sure about.
It is best to avoid all tap water in countries that you are not sure is safe to drink.  Drink bottled water and make sure that when you brush your teeth you use the bottled water to rinse.  Avoid having ice in your drink as this will also be local tap water.
Make sure that you drink plenty of water throughout your holiday, especially in hot countries, staying hydrated is important for you and your baby.
Before you depart, talk with your OB-GYN about what types of bug spray are safest for you to use during your pregnancy.

Talking to Your Doctor About Your Holiday

Discussing your holiday plans with your doctor will allow you to cover off all your travel concerns. Discuss any insect sprays, sun cream etc that you are thinking of using whilst away to confirm they are safe to use whilst pregnant

If You Get Sick Whilst Traveling

Before you travel make sure you have the appropriate travel insurance for pregnancy.  Take your pregnancy notes with you in case you need to seek medical advice as this will allow them to know how your pregnancy has been to date.
